3 Times Writers Win Economics Award

Three Los Angeles Times foreign correspondents have been named winners of the Overseas Press Club award for best economics reporting from abroad by newspapers or wire services.

Juan M. Vasquez, Times correspondent in Mexico City, accepted the award at a banquet in New York on behalf of himself, Buenos Aires correspondent William D. Montalbano and Rio de Janeiro correspondent Juan de Onis. Their winning entry was a series of articles on the Mexican economy, published last Nov. 18-21.

Three other Times writers received a citation for daily newspaper or wire service reporting from abroad for their coverage of the assassination last Oct. 31 of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. They are Rone Tempest, correspondent in New Delhi; Tyler Marshall, now in Bonn, and Bob Secter, now of The Times’ Washington Bureau.

India coverage by Jeff Sommer of Newsday won the top award for best daily newspaper or wire service reporting from abroad.
