Freeway League : Buena Park Stops Win Streak at Six With 13-7 Upset Over Sunny Hills

Buena Park High School took advantage of three Sunny Hills errors and scored six unearned runs Friday as the Coyotes upset the Lancers, 13-7, in a Freeway League game at Sunny Hills.

The loss snapped a six-game Sunny Hills’ win streak and was the first league defeat for the first-place Lancers against 10 wins. Buena Park, which began the day in last place, improved to 4-7 in league.

A error by Sunny Hills’ first baseman Rod Turner on a hard-hit ground ball in the first inning helped the Coyotes scored three unearned runs. Aurelio Solis had the big hit of the inning for Buena Park, a two-run single.

Buena Park scored three more uneared runs in the seventh after Sunny Hills had cut the Coyotes’ lead to 9-7. Lancer Second baseman Russell Fredericks made two errors in the inning.

Omar Rodriguez had three hits for Buena Park, including a three-run home run. Paul Bunch added a base-empty home run.

Tim Byrnes homered and doubled and drove in two runs for Sunny Hills, and Paul Abbott got a single to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.

Mike Kotcin (1-2) pitched the first five innings to get the win, and Reggie Brown went the final two to earn a save. Mike Wilson (3-2), who last 4 innings, took the loss.

In other Freeway League action:

Troy 7, La Habra 1--The Warriors scored five runs in the first inning in the game at Troy. A bases loaded double by Tony Godfrey drove in three of those runs. Bill St. Clair was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Warrior pitcher Tony Panetti threw a three hitter had a one hitter going into the seventh inning. He struck out 10 and walked two for Troy.

Fullerton 4, Sonora 0--The Indians shut out the host Raiders.
