OK, OK. I listened to you and only bought T-shirts with the wheat shaft in the proper place (“Logo Provides Clue to Authenticity,” by Dennis McDougal, April 15).

Now I have noticed the wheat shaft appears in the USA for Africa video in both the first “A” in Africa on the banner hanging behind the group, and, on the T-shirts worn by some of the singers, the last “A” in Africa includes the wheat shaft.

What gives? You have reported one as the bootleg, the other, the real McCoy. Which is which? We are the readers, we are confused.

The USA for Africa Foundation uses both logos (wheat shaft in the first “A” and wheat shaft in the second “A”), but officially sanctioned sweatshirts and T-shirts use the logo with the shaft in the second “A.” Counterfeit merchandise--some of which now perfectly duplicates the official logo--does not carry a copyright notice and does not have a “Made in U.S.A.” tag in the collar.
