Goldie Wins the Singles and Doubles Finals to Lead Stanford to Pac-10 Title Over UCLA

With Dan Goldie winning championships in both singles and doubles competition, Stanford University captured the Pac-10 team championship in the 86th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament Sunday afternoon at Libbey Park.

Goldie defeated UCLA’s Mark Basham, 6-3, 6-2, in the Pac-10 singles final and then teamed with Eric Rosenfeld to beat the UCLA duo of Brad Pearce and Ken Diller for the doubles title, 6-4, 7-5.

Those victories helped Stanford outscore UCLA, 19-13, in the race for the William L. Thatcher Challenge Trophy, emblematic of the Ojai Pac-10 champion. USC, with nine points, placed third.

Stanford also won the women’s intercollegiate team competition, edging USC, 14-13. The Cardinal was led by Linda Gates, who lost to USC’s Cecilia Fernandez in the singles final, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the independent college men’s division, Kelly Jones and Martin Laurendeau lifted Pepperdine to the team championship as the Waves bested San Jose State, 14-9.

Jones defeated Laurendeau in an all-Pepperdine singles final, 6-3, 6-2, before the teammates combined to beat UC Irvine’s duo of Julian Barnham and Darren Yates, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

In community college play, Los Angeles Pierce won the men’s division, while Orange Coast and Santa Monica tied for the women’s team title. Jonas Wallgard won the men’s singles title for Pierce and Michelle Hain of Riverside City won the women’s singles division.
