Flintridge School to Dedicate Building

Ralph Flewelling must be popping his buttons. A graduate of Flintridge Preparatory School, he heads the architectural firm Flewelling & Moody, responsible for designing the new split and scored concrete block and steel science/cultural center on campus.

The $2.5-million facility is being dedicated this weekend in a series of sparklers.

Alumni and past parents have the first preview Saturday of the 400-seat auditorium and classrooms and laboratories. Sunday’s tour is for major donors and past and current trustees, who made it possible to build the facility without incurring outside debt. Monday, parents will be honored for their financial support, and Tuesday the La Canada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and political and educational leaders get a look-see.

The auditorium is named the Norris Auditorium, in recognition of the grant from the Kenneth and Eileen Norris Foundation. The computer lab is named for the Braun Foundation, the physics lab in memory of Kenneth Post (a graduate killed in an auto accident), the chemistry lab for William Murfey (a graduate providing continuing significant financial support) and the biology lab for the W. H. Keck Foundation. Nice cooperation.

Mother’s Day, move over. The Cedars-Sinai’s Helping Hand support group is including Danny when it honors his wife, Rose Marie Thomas, at the annual Mother’s Day luncheon at the Beverly Hilton on Friday. The Thomases will be Parents of the Year.

And watching will be 1,000 philanthropic-minded ladies, including the Thomases’ daughter Terry. Marlo and Tony will be unable to share in the tribute, according to Ann Saltzman, president.

Who’s named to receive the Gold Hand Award (one of the Hand’s board) is a big secret.

Luncheon chairman Silvia Ezor has booked Bonwit Teller for “a tempting fashion show.”

Supportive parents, relatives and friends beamed at the presentation of 42 young ladies, recognized for their volunteer work by the Assistance League of Southern California at the Medallion Ball in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton.

Academy Award winner (for best supporting actor in “The Killing Fields”) Dr. Haing S. Ngor will be honored for distinguished service to the Los Angeles refugee community at the International Ball at the Los Angeles Hyatt Regency on Saturday evening.

The 71-year-old International Institute of Los Angeles, one of the oldest private social service agencies in the area, hosts the ball. It specializes in multilingual programs to benefit immigrants and refugees.

Ngor became a friend of the institute several years ago while working at the Chinatown Service Center, helping Asian refugees make a new life in the United States.

There was standing room only in Hancock Park for the birthday celebration hosted by Consul General of Japan Taizo Watanabe and Mrs. Watanabe in honor of the emperor of Japan.

Leslie Charleson, “General Hospital’s” Dr. Monica Quartermaine, will be hostess at an “Afternoon of Magic” luncheon/fashion extravaganza Saturday at the Sheraton Premier in Universal City.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation gets the proceeds.

Charleson met a CF victim, Chris, through a “General Hospital” fan club in 1972. She’s been dedicated to the cause since and received the Entertainer of the Year Award in February from the foundation’s Los Angeles/Orange Counties chapter.

“General Hospital” cast members will model Eileen Warren fashions, while CF families model the more demure Laura Ashley looks. Peter Grego says the show will be glamorous.
