Cal State Long Beach will host Kaleidoscope ‘85, a festival highlighting the university’s academic, cultural, social and recreational offerings, from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at CSULB, 1250 Bellflower Blvd.

The campus- and community-wide event will feature academic open houses, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, fine arts presentations, sporting events, alumni receptions, international food booths and wine tasting.

Natalie Roesch, a re-entry student majoring in history, proposed the name Kaleidoscope for the first-time festival. “I thought it would make a great name because it kind of portrays colorful parts that make up one event,” she said.

Among the more than 100 events will be two science extravaganzas designed especially for youths. Visitors to the School of Natural Science will be able to touch live sharks and tide-pool animals, view 12- and 15-foot pythons and play a music synthesizer. Engineering department activities will include computer demonstrations, rubber-band car races, toothpick bridge building and the popular “egg drop” from the top of the Engineering Building.

Other attractions will include the International Cafe, a combination fair, bazaar and cafe representing countries from Indonesia to Norway, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Plaza; the 15th annual Pow Wow of Native American Indians, a religious ceremony with costumes, dancing, singing and drum playing, from noon to 7 p.m. in the central quad area; the traditional Brown and Gold football game from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the football practice field and the Renaissance Banquet from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in the Chart Room.

Admission to the festival is free and parking will be provided on all campus lots (except lot 5), including the commercial lot on the south side of 7th Street.
