A New-Fashioned ‘Roof Raising’ for Homeless Women

Harriet Harris, left, and Ann Lusk look over a model of a hotel for homeless women planned at the Santa Ana YWCA before a “Raise the Roof” brunch at The Ritz in Newport Beach Sunday. Harris is executive vice president of the Program for Women Foundation project; Lusk was brunch chairman.

More than 250 attended the affair, which featured fashions from Guy LaRoche in Fashion Island and netted $13,000. According to consulting project director John Murray, the City of Santa Ana will require the “hotel” to assess each prospective tenant a small, to-be-determined charge to guard against long-term residency and to ensure that the shelter will not become another “mission.”
