CAPSULES Thumbnail sketches of the 13 horses running in today’s 111th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., in post-position order: IRISH FIGHTER--A well-beaten third, 7 1/2 lengths behind the winner, Tank’s Prospect, in the Arkansas Derby. Also third, two lengths behind the winner, in the Louisiana Derby. To be ridden for the first time by Pat Day, the nation’s leading jockey in wins for the last three years and a rider who knows Churchill Downs better than anybody. CHIEF’S CROWN--The champion 2-year-old who has been even better this year, having won three stakes in three starts. Had a near-record 1:47 3/5 clocking in the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass at Keeneland April 25. His rider is Don MacBeth, who has not won a Derby in eight tries, his best finish being a third with Reinvested in 1982. RHOMAN RULE--After two impressive wins in Florida this year, he finished third, five lengths behind victorious Eternal Prince in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct April 20. Loss was blamed by trainer Angel Penna Jr. on a slick track. Has jockey Jacinto Vasquez, who won the Derby with Foolish Pleasure in ’75 and Genuine Risk in ’80. TANK’S PROSPECT--Recovered from throat surgery after running last in the Santa Anita Derby, he won the Arkansas Derby by 6 1/2 lengths against so-so opposition. Came from far back to finish three-quarters of a length behind Chief’s Crown in the mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Hollywood Park last November. He gives overnight West Coast riding star Gary Stevens his first Derby mount. ETERNAL PRINCE--A strapping colt--about 17 hands and 1,200 pounds--he beat Proud Truth and Rhoman Rule in the Wood Memorial. Son of Majestic Prince, winner of the ’69 Derby. First Derby horse for both trainer Butch Lenzini, who won the ’82 Preakness with Aloma’s Ruler, and jockey Richard Migliore. STEPHAN’S ODYSSEY--Unsuccessful against Chief’s Crown and Proud Truth in Florida, the Hollywood Futurity winner beat field of non-Derby horses in Lexington Stakes at Keeneland April 16 in his last start. Reunites trainer Woody Stephens and jockey Laffit Pincay, winners of last year’s Derby with Swale and first in the last three Belmont Stakes. ENCOLURE--Son of Riva Ridge, who won the ’72 Derby, he was first sold for $25,000 at a Kentucky auction, later sold in Louisiana for $65,000. A distant second to Tank’s Prospect in the Arkansas Derby, eighth in Louisiana Derby. Ron Ardoin is probably the least known of the Derby jockeys but has been a leading rider at Louisiana Downs for last five years. I AM THE GAME--A $225,000 yearling, he was second to Spend A Buck in both the Cherry Hill Mile and Garden State Stakes at Garden State Park, losing by total margin of 20 lengths. Trained by King Leatherbury, a leading claiming conditioner in Maryland, and ridden for first time by Darrel McHargue. FLOATING RESERVE--Second, 5 1/2 lengths back, to Chief’s Crown in the Blue Grass. Trouble-prone, he was fourth in the Santa Anita Derby and hasn’t won since the Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita Feb. 6. SPEND A BUCK--After arthroscopic knee surgery to remove a bone chip in November, he was third in the Bay Shore at Aqueduct and a big winner in both the Cherry Mile and Garden State Stakes. Ran 1:45 4/5 in the Garden State, just missing Secretariat’s 1 1/8-mile record. Rider is Angel Cordero, Derby winner with Cannonade in ’74 and Bold Forbes in ’76. PROUD TRUTH--After winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Florida Derby, was second to Chief’s Crown in the Flamingo and second behind Eternal Prince in the Wood. Made his debut in early December and has had eight races in the last five months. Aboard will be Jorge Velasquez, winner of the ’81 Derby with Pleasant Colony. SKYWALKER--After traffic problems in several early races, he lost the lead to Fast Account in the stretch of the Santa Anita Derby, then came back to win by a nose. Hasn’t run in four weeks but is a good morning horse who runs well when coming off long rests. His jockey, Eddie Delahoussaye, won consecutive Derbies, in ’82 with Gato Del Sol and in ’83 with Sunny’s Halo. FAST ACCOUNT--Has been second in half of his 12 starts, including his last two outings, the Santa Anita Derby and the Derby Trial at Churchill Downs last Saturday. Winless in four starts as 3-year-old, he’s the winner of a maiden race and a restricted stake at Hollywood Park in December. Trainer Patty Johnson is trying to become the first woman to saddle a Derby winner.
