Previewing the Golden Thimble Exhibit

A big crowd turned out for preview night of Golden Thimble VIII, the nationally acclaimed competitive exhibit sponsored biennially by the Auxiliary of the Hospital of the Good Samaritan.

Chairman Mrs. Barry W. Lundy had the fun of helping distribute the 13 gold thimble awards created by Sol Laykin of Laykin et Cie, I. Magnin after thread-raising judging.

Among first nighters were the Jack Blumenthals, the Edward McLaughlins, the Chauncey Medberrys, the John Meeks, the Richard Hotalings, the Dan Chandlers, the Robert Brants Jr., the Ronald Garvers, the Thomas Ridgways Jr., the Gerald S. Pattersons, the Rodney Williamses, the John A. Woodwards and the Rt. Rev. and Mrs. Robert Rusack.

Others admiring the canvases, petit point, embroidery and counted thread exhibits were the R. Stanton Averys, Mrs. Clyde Burr, Mrs. Frederick Larkin, and Drs. and Mmes. Richard Call, John H. Payne, Jim Helsper, Richard Clark, John A. Zaro Jr. and F. Grant Buckle.

The show remains open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until May 18 in the hospital auditorium, 634 S. Lucas Ave.

Katy Jurado, TV and film personality, will be honored with the El Angel award for outstanding entertainer of Latino descent at the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts Ole Theatre/Teatro fund-raiser today at the Music Center.

Established in 1973, the BFA is a Latino performing arts institution and cultural resource.

It’s also taking professional theater to communities with rare access to such experience, says Carmen Zapata, BFA founder and president.

Bruce G. Willison, president and chief executive officer of First Interstate Bank Ltd., heads the $175-per person event, assisted by William K. Howell, president of Miller Brewing Co., and John C. Kehoe, regional vice president of Allstate Insurance Co.

The goal is $100,000. Awards also will be make to businesses for their contributions.

The Pasadena Central Improvement Assn. hosts cocktails today at the home of PCIA president Edward C. Turrentine to launch plans for its upcoming Masked Ball. Tannis Nelson is ball chairman. Funds will be used for the beautification of Old Pasadena, the eight square blocks nationally recognized as a Historic Commercial District.

Polytechnic School children are letting down their hair after hours of grooming their pets and working on projects of every description for the 67th Annual Pet and Hobby Show Friday on campus

As it has since 1918, Boy Scout Troop 5 will sponsor the show.

Congratulations, Group Effort: $465,000 was raised at the sixth annual Gala Dinner and Auction at the Beverly Wilshire, much to the pleasure of president Lynn Klinenberg.

When Auctioneer Robert Abell gave the signal, guests took their scissors, conveniently placed on the tables, cut the strings and the balloons soared to the ceiling.

In on the fun were Fred W. Wasserman, honorary chairman; State Controller Kenneth Cory and his wife, Carol; Alan Sieroty; Dr. and Mrs. Art Ulene; Abby Dalton and Richard Smith; Stuart and Dierdre Damon; Bonnie Franklin and her husband, Sandy McClintock; Stan Rubin, national president of the Arthritis Foundation; the Charles Von Der Ahes; the Richard Stones; the Thomas E. Leaveys; the John Blands; Richard and Linda Ellis; Rabbi Harvey J. Fields of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, and Mr. Blackwell, who won the raffle for the 1985 Nissan 300ZX.

Last week at the home of Dr. and Mrs. James Zumberge in San Marino, Mrs. Edwin Lee Koll became USC Trojan League’s new president. Other new officers are Mmes. John F. Tylicki, Paul Parrish, David S. Atha, Alexander Pantages, Frank W. Troost, Robert L. Bailey and Marcel George.

New members Mmes. Sidney A. Adair, Brian Dockweiler Crahan, Glen R. Mitchell, Thomas R. Sheperd and Charlene G. Laraneta were introduced at the luncheon.
