Sen. Pete Wilson underwent an emergency appendectomy this afternoon at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md., according to his spokesman Otto Bos.

The 51-year-old Republican became ill over the weekend and was driven to the hospital this morning by an aide after complaining of “acute pains in the abdomen,” Bos said. The illness of California’s junior senator caused him to miss crucial votes on the federal budget.
