British film star Dawn Addams, whose relatively undistinguished career was highlighted by a leading role opposite Charlie Chaplin and as “the other woman” in the then-morally questionable “The Moon Is Blue,” died of cancer in London on Tuesday, her agent told Reuters news service.

Miss Addams, who was 54, went to Hollywood in 1950 and appeared in a number of films including “Young Bess,” “Plymouth Adventure” and a bit role in “Singing in the Rain.”

Her first big American part came in “The Moon Is Blue” in 1953, a comedy that featured such words as “virgin” and “mistress.” Maggie McNamara and David Niven starred in the picture.

In 1957 Charlie Chaplin selected her as his co-star in “A King in New York,” a satire with an anti-American slant made in England after Chaplin left this country because of political and legal disagreements.

Most recently she had been seen in a series of low-budget European thriller films, the most recent of which was “The Vault of Horror” in 1973.

Miss Addams’ career also took her to Italy where she married Prince Vittorio Massimo in 1954. They divorced in 1971. They had one son.
