A small plane released more than 7 million sterile male fruit flies in the Miami area, the first of many drops in a 75-day program designed to interrupt the pest’s life cycle and prevent infestations in the state’s citrus. Ernest Collins, spokesman for the Medfly Eradication Project, said officials hope that fertile females that survived earlier sprayings will mate unproductively with the 300 million or so sterile male flies to be dropped during the program.
