Fullerton : Parking Rules Altered in Vicinity of Church

Congregation members will be allowed to continue parking on streets near the First Evangelical Free Church, as a result of City Council action this week. The council voted down a Sunday-morning parking ban that had been proposed for the neighborhood.

Of the 5,000 people who attend two services and classes at the church on Sundays, about 500 park cars on the streets near the church during each service, said Barry Eaton, the city’s senior development planner.

Some of the neighbors of the church, at Bastanchury Road and Brea Boulevard, had requested the parking ban. A survey conducted by the city found that 217 residents opposed the restriction and 150 supported it, Eaton said.

The council did place Sunday-morning restrictions on 75 parking spaces on portions of Bastanchury Road and Brea Boulevard, City Clerk Anne York said. She said parking on the shoulders of the busy streets across from the church will be prohibited because of safety concerns.

The church plans to add a parking lot and restripe a second one, once it begins construction on property that is now a shopping center on the northeast corner of Brea Boulevard and Rolling Hills Drive, Eaton said.

In other action Wednesday, council members approved a $246,822 contract to install an automated circulation system in the library. The system will help librarians keep track of overdue books, City Manager William Winter said.
