South African Bishop Desmond Tutu, winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, arrived in Los Angeles on Wednesday with plans to raise money for human rights activities and to address students, clergy and Democratic Party activists.

The black Anglican prelate, an outspoken opponent of South Africa’s racial segregation, was welcomed at the airport by Mayor Tom Bradley.

Tutu is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. today at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

Tutu’s trip to the United States is sponsored by the California Democratic Council, a statewide activist organization. The bishop will address the group’s 33rd annual convention in Los Angeles on Friday.
