Western Athletic Conference Track : BYU Leads, Aztecs Fourth After Day One
After six events of the Western Athletic Conference track championships, San Diego State is in fourth place with 20 points. BYU leads with 61 points, followed by New Mexico (42) and Texas El Paso (26).
Competing in 40 m.p.h. winds in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday, Steve Hoth of SDSU finished sixth in the hammer (165 feet, 7 inches) and third in the discus (165 feet, 1 inch). In the long jump final, Aztec Rob Pote placed fourth (24 feet, 4 1/2 inches) and teammate Roe Holiday was sixth (23 feet, 11 3/4 inches). SDSU’s Mark Sanders was second in the decathlon with 7,161 points.
In preliminary heats, Hurbie Milner won a 200-meter dash (20.7 seconds) and placed second in a 100-meter dash (10.32) for SDSU. Aaron Thigpin won a 100-meter dash (10.30) and placed second in a 200-meter dash (20.9). Tony Burns won a 400-meter heat (49.71).
“We had a pretty good first day,” Aztec Coach Dixon Farmer said. “It was one of the best first days in the last few years. And our strongest events, the sprints and hurdles, come on Saturday.”
