The World : CIA Operations Probed

Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he has begun an independent inquiry into half a dozen CIA operations. Among them is a counterterrorism program that reportedly was canceled after bombers, hired by CIA-trained personnel, detonated an unauthorized Lebanon car bomb in March that killed more than 80--and missed its intended target, a suspected terrorist leader. Leahy said he was not informed of the Lebanon program but “found out about it on my own” last month. He refused to give details. An Administration source insisted that the Senate and House committees have been told of all covert operations.
