Ten high school seniors in the San Diego Unified School District have been awarded National Merit Scholarships based on their overall academic achievement, leadership and high scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, school officials have announced.
National Merit Scholarships are given to those students judged to be in about the top one-half of 1% of all high school graduates. The scholarships include corporate-sponsored four-year awards of up to $8,000 and one-time awards of $2,000. There also are college-sponsored, four-year scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $8,000.
Five La Jolla High students received the awards. They are Caroline Boyden, Alan Hu, Theodore Lee, Susan Schaefer and Charlie Recksieck. Other scholarship winners are Brian Creek and Trevor Wilson of University City, Matt Breaden and Jonathon Gay of Gompers, and Andrea Senteney of Patrick Henry.
