Some Progress Reported in United Airline Talks

BOSTON —
“Some progress” was reported Wednesday in negotiations between United Airlines and its 4,900 pilots, but union officers prepared anyway for a threatened strike early Friday against the nation’s largest air carrier.
“We sense some progress in the meetings, but we do not have an agreement,” National Mediation Board Chairman Helen Witt said. She refused to disclose details of the talks or say whether she expected a settlement before the strike deadline at one minute past midnight.
