School Expenses

Share

I think it’s time we re-evaluate our idea of “free” education in this state. I am referring to the picture (Times, May 14) of two couples dressed in top hats, tails and walking sticks (girls in long gowns, of course) who rented a helicopter to go to the prom.

I teach at a high school in which a fair-sized portion of the student body is from low-income families, and our students spend hundreds of dollars to go to the prom, including renting limousines. And, yet, I cannot take the kids on an educational field trip if they have to pay their own admissions.

The kids have money now. They have part-time jobs and no bills. We need to get rid of our antiquated laws.
