Costa Mesa : Council Votes for End to Nuclear Blasts by Aug. 6

In a symbolic gesture, the City Council has voted unanimously to declare Aug. 6 the day to end all nuclear weapons explosions and 1985 the year to end the arms race.

Aug. 6 will mark the 40th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. According to the text of the resolution, 1,500 nuclear weapons have been detonated since that day when a lone American bomber ushered in the nuclear age.

Mayor Norma Hertzog said hundreds of cities across the United States are passing resolutions calling upon the United States, the Soviet Union and all other countries with nuclear weapons to end their use.

“I don’t know what the chances are of ending all nuclear explosions with Costa Mesa voting for it, but the resolution is a kind of apple pie and motherhood theme,” she said.

A copy of the Costa Mesa resolution, along with those from other cities, will be sent to President Reagan, she said.
