Proposed Prison Site in L.A.
We are the developers of Plaza del Sol, a new shopping complex at Eighth and Soto Streets in Boyle Heights. Plaza del Sol will be the first new large retail complex in this community in the past 20 years. We feel that our project will create a positive momentum to improve the economic and social environment for Boyle Heights. To date, we have received enthusiastic support from all of the citizens of the community.
We are greatly disturbed to learn of the proposed state prison that would be constructed at 12th and Santa Fe, which is approximately one-half mile from our Plaza del Sol development. We feel that this development will have a strong negative impact on the community and greatly damage a positive momentum that we are creating. It would seem appropriate for the Department of Corrections to reevaluate the downtown Los Angeles site and consider a more suitable location outside the Boyle Heights community.
