Traffic System Recognized:The city’s traffic operations division, which operates the largest computerized signal system of its kind in California, has won the Transportation Partnership Award from the Orange County Transportation Commission. The system was established in 1980 as a response to traffic jams, smog and wasted fuel, according to T. C. Sutaria, traffic operations engineer. Traffic signals now adjust automatically to changes in traffic volume and flow patterns throughout the day, he said. The city anticipates savings to motorists of about $3.4 million over the next two years, just from one 41-signal network along Main and Bristol streets and Grand Avenue, he said.
