Two school board members who live together but are not married defeated a recall bid supported by people who said the couple “violated accepted community standards,” election officials said Wednesday.

Sandra Kay Lambert defeated the recall bid Tuesday by a 328-312 vote, while Clinton Ogle won, 343 to 293, the officials said. The tally was complete except for a few absentee ballots, officials said.

Ogle, 38, and Lambert, 34, said recalls should be based on job performance alone and contended that a successful recall could open any volunteer’s private life to public scrutiny.

“We just want people who are upright and moral to lead us,” said the Rev. Jerry Warren of the Sheridan Nazarene Church, one of the recall organizers in this town of 2,375.
