COMMENCEMENT 1985 : Saddleback Community College

State Sen. Art Torres (D-South Pasadena) was the featured speaker at the Saddleback Community College District’s combined commencement ceremony for the North and South campuses Thursday evening in Mission Viejo in the South campus gymnasium. Torres, a member of the California Legislature since 1974, spoke on the topic, “The College Graduate and Social Responsibility.” Student speakers were Julie Hornibrook and Steve Schroeder.

Degrees: 930 diplomas were awarded.

Santa Ana College

Santa Ana College had its 69th commencement ceremonies Thursday evening in Cook Gymnasium on the campus. Orange Mayor James Beam gave the keynote speech, entitled “Never Give Up.” Alumni Achievement Awards were presented to Theodore Jessee, class of 1927, president of Jessee’s Appliance Co. and a member of the Santa Ana Planning and Redevelopment commissions; to John Lutz Jr., class of 1927, of Tustin, an insurance consultant active in many community and service organizations, and to Romana Schneider, class of 1971, of Tustin, a member of the Bowers Museum Belles Auxiliary. Student speaker was valedictorian Patricia Phillips, 46, a former housewife who plans to continue her studies at Cal State Fullerton.

Degrees: 300 diplomas were awarded.
