USC’s Randolph Blows Six-Shot Lead, Loses Playoff to Buckeyes’ Burroughs

Clark Burroughs of Ohio State made up six strokes against Sam Randolph of USC on the back nine to force a sudden-death playoff, then won the NCAA individual golf championship with a par on the first hole Saturday at Haines City, Fla.

Randolph, a junior, shot a two-under-par 34 on the front nine, then fell apart on the back with a 40 for a two-over-par 74 and a four-round total of 285. Burroughs caught him with a 34 for a 71.

Houston held off a late charge by Oklahoma State to win the team title by three strokes with a total of 1,172. It was the Cougars’ 16th NCAA championship. Florida finished third at 1,185.

Danielle Ammaccapane, a sophomore at Arizona State, won the NCAA women’s golf title by one stroke at New Seabury, Mass.

Deb Richard of Florida, the tournament favorite, Dottie Pepper of Furman and Jody Rosenthal of Tulsa finished in a three-way tie for second at 299.

Florida won the team title with a four-round total of 1,218, 15 strokes ahead of Tulsa.
