NAIA World Series : Southern California College Beats Phillips University in First Round

Pat Price keyed a five-run fourth inning with a two-run single Monday that helped Southern California College to a 7-2 victory over Phillips University of Oklahoma in the first round of the NAIA World Series at Lewiston, Ida.

Price’s hit was the Vanguards’ third straight in the inning after two were out at Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field.

SCC (44-18-2) scored its first run on an error, the second on Howard Wellema’s RBI single and the third on Titus Houston’s RBI double. Price then capped the inning with his two-run single.

Price, who added an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning, finished with three RBIs. Wellema went 3 for 4 with three singles and an RBI.

Junior right-hander Brian Otten (17-5) went the distance, allowing nine hits and striking out five, to earn the victory. Otten was named Sunday to the NAIA All-American first team, while shortstop David Turney made the second team.

Southern California has a bye today and will play in a winner’s bracket game Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Tim Wofford went 3 for 4 to lead the Haymakers. His single in the seventh inning scored Cordell Williams, who had tripled. John David Pete drove in Phillips’ other run with a solo homer in the fifth inning, which broke up Otten’s shutout.
