Burbank Rejects Razing Home for Parking Lot

The Burbank City Council Tuesday overturned a recommendation from its planning board and voted unanimously against construction of a parking lot where a single-family home now stands.

The council debated a proposal for a conditional-use permit from developer Mark J. Brankovich, who owns the Monte Carlo Italian Delicatessen and Pinnochio Restaurant. He proposed leveling a home at 914 Fairview St. for construction of a 21-space parking lot, which would be used by employees and patrons of the two businesses.

“I think residents have the right to keep this block the way it is,” said Councilman Michael Hastings.

The city Planning Commission approved the proposal April 22, but the council had received a petition with more than 200 signatures and 81 form letters opposing it.

An overflow crowd in the council chambers broke into applause as residents spoke against the proposed permit. “I live right behind the proposed parking lot,” said Veronica Toole, who appeared before the council with her two small children. “My house has been burglarized twice. The parking lot makes me more vulnerable.”
