President Francois Mitterrand opened the 36th Paris International Air show today, surrounded by thousands of police, army snipers and dogs trained to detect explosives.

Officials said the massive security around the sprawling exhibition site at Le Bourget airport was ordered following threats of terrorist attacks. They said the entire area was sealed off overnight while anti-terrorist squads made a final sweep of the assembled aircraft, weaponry and exhibitors’ stands.
