Sports DIGEST : Howard, Denton Reach Division I Track Finals

Former Kennedy High sprinter Sherri Howard and CSUN javelin thrower Shawn Denton qualified for the NCAA Division I track finals Thursday in Austin, Tex.

Howard, who was an Olympic gold medalist last summer in the 1,600-meter relay, was the fastest qualifier in the women’s 400 meters at 51.95. Howard competes for Cal Sate Los Angeles.

Howard is also a member of the 1,600-meter relay team that qualified for the final with a run of 3:30.25.

Denton qualified in the javelin with a throw of 235 feet, 9 inches.


5K/10K Run at Moorpark College

A 5K/10K run will be held Saturday morning at Moorpark College. The 5K begins at 7:30. The 10K begins at 8:15.

Mexican-American Basketball Tournament


Several former Valley-area basketball players will represent Los Angeles in the National Invitational Mexican American Basketball Tournament, June 7-9, at Schurr High in Montebello.

The players are: Steve Ornelaz (West Texas State, Moorpark College, Thousand Oaks High), Eric Marquez (Cal State Northridge, Pierce College), Joe Martinez (Santa Monica College, Van Nuys High), Fernando Lopez (Alemany High), Mario Lopez (Valley College, Notre Dame High), and Erich Orozco (College of the Canyons, St. Genevieve High).

Swim Team Tryouts in Calabasas


CLASS Aquatics will hold tryouts for swimmers 5-years-old and up on June 8 at 10 a.m. in the pool at Calabasas High.

Valley All-Star Baseball Game

An all-star baseball game featuring 40 of the Valley’s best high school seniors will be played June 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Cal State Northridge.


Proceeds will go to the Bernie Milligan Scholarship Foundation, which annually honors an outstanding graduate athlete.
