Angels Expected to Sign Steve Rogers

The Angels are expected to announce the signing of former Montreal right-hander Steve Rogers today. A Friday contract offer carried the provision that Rogers, who was 2-5 when released by the Expos nearly two weeks ago, first reports to the Angels’ Edmonton farm team.

Rogers, whose control was inconsistent during a 25-minute audition for Angel Manager Gene Mauch in New York Thursday, is expected to accept an assignment that would probably span 10 to 14 days, enabling him to make two or three starts for Edmonton.

Mauch, Rogers’ first manager at Montreal, said in the wake of Thursday’s audition that he would need to see Rogers’ throw once more with improved control. Thus, the Edmonton concept.
