Los Angeles public school students have raised $256,590.57 to aid famine victims, school superintendent Harry Handler announced. Handler said 396 Los Angeles Unified School District schools have made donations. The fund drive has topped the total by New York City public schools, gathered earlier this year for famine relief, even though Los Angeles has only about half the number of students, Handler said. He said that about 150 schools have not yet made their contributions and that the deadline for raising funds will be extended until June 21, the end of the school year.
