Nicaragua’s ambassador to the Organization of American States accused Costa Rica on Thursday of undercutting the Central American peace process by taking a dispute with Nicaragua to the OAS.

Ambassador Edgard Parrales said the conflict between the two countries over a recent border incident should be resolved within the Contadora regional peace process. Costa Rica has said that Nicaraguan forces opened fire on a Costa Rican Civil Guard patrol last Friday, killing two people and wounding nine. In addition, nine Sandinista soldiers reportedly were taken into custody by Costa Rican forces.

Costa Rican Foreign Minister Carlos Jose Gutierrez is scheduled to ask the OAS at a special meeting today to send an investigating team to the area in Costa Rica where the incident took place.
