Blacks have grown to more than 12% of the nation’s population, increasing at twice the rate of whites, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.

The bureau counted 28.6 million blacks as of last July, 12.1% of the population. That was up from 11.8% in 1980.

The 1.8-million increase in the black population between 1980 and 1984 was a growth of 6.7%. The white population increased 3.2%, to 201.4 million.

The difference in growth rates was a result of higher reproduction among blacks, bureau analyst Louisa Miller said.
