La Palma : City Council Selects Dan Collins as Mayor
Dan Collins, a La Palma City Council member reelected last week, was chosen mayor this week.
Fellow council members unanimously selected Collins, 52, Tuesday night.
Collins, a retired electrical engineer, was elected June 4 to fill the seat left vacant by Tony Van Dyke, who died of a heart attack Dec. 4 while presiding during his first council meeting as mayor.
Collins served on the council from 1972 to 1976 and from 1980 to 1984. He served as mayor in 1981 and 1982.
A 17-year resident of the city, Collins said one of his main goals as mayor is to see the completion of the 40-acre Center Pointe development already under construction.
The $80-million redevelopment project off the Artesia Freeway at Valley View Street and Orangethorpe Avenue is expected to generate about $1 million a year in city revenue, Collins said.
