Panel Approves Optional Plan for Garaging Cabs

Share

An “optional garaging plan” for Los Angeles’ taxi companies was approved Thursday by the City Transportation Commission.

The commission acted after a City Council committee expressed a preference for optional garaging, which allows drivers to take their cabs home, rather than the mandatory central garaging originally approved by the commission. Central garaging is intended to make sure that cabs are maintained and inspected daily.

The commission also voted to allow the financially troubled L.A. Taxi Co. to treat its employee drivers as “independent contractors,” rather than employees--a move that will allow the company to forgo large Social Security and other payroll costs.

The actions now go to the City Council.
