Voters will decide in November whether the office of city clerk should remain an elected position or become an appointive post.

The City Council voted Monday to put the issue on the Nov. 5 ballot. City Clerk Joyce South, whose term would have expired in April, 1986, resigned this month because she is moving to Orange County. A city ordinance requires the clerk to be a Lawndale resident.

In 1980, voters made city clerk an elective office with a four-year term. South, whose predecessor also did not complete her term, was the city’s second elected city clerk. The clerk, who makes $750 a month, keeps city records and runs elections.
