The Metropolitan Opera announced that its national tour, which has lost $1 million annually for several years, will be canceled after next year.

Bruce Crawford, president of the Metropolitan Opera, said in an article in today’s New York Times the 1986 tour will visit only four cities--Atlanta, Minneapolis, Cleveland and Boston. Until recently the tour included Memphis, Dallas, Washington and Detroit.

Crawford said the Metropolitan is negotiating for a tour of the Far East in 1988 and discussing a lengthy visit to Los Angeles later in the decade.
