Ying Ying, Mexico City’s prolific giant panda, gave birth to twin cubs, her fourth and fifth offspring--only the third time panda twins have been born in captivity, zoo officials said today.

Chapultepec Park Zoo Director Maria Elena Hoyo said the stronger of the cubs born Tuesday weighed almost 4 ounces, the other 2 1/2 ounces. “Unfortunately the mother has only wanted to protect the larger one,” Hoyo said. The smaller sibling was being cared for by veterinarians.
