State Adds Cheese Checks in North

Three cheese-making plants in Northern California have been added to the list of companies that will have state inspectors present during operating hours to sample batches of Mexican-style cheese as they are being produced, authorities said Thursday.
The inspections came after 46 deaths and dozens of illnesses were linked to bacteria found in Mexican-style cheeses manufactured at Jalisco Mexican Products Inc. in Artesia.
State Food and Agriculture Department officials said the companies added to the inspection list include Marquez Bros. Mexican Imports and Ventura Imports in San Jose and Lagunas Cheese Co. in Sacramento.
