YMCA Names First Man and Woman of Year

Share

The YMCA Federation of Orange County presented its first Man and Woman of the Year awards last Friday night at a black-tie dinner dance at the Meridien Hotel in Newport Beach. Honorees were Maury DeWald, one of the founding trustees of the federation, and Bernice Hird, who was, interestingly enough, “Mr. YMCA” from the North Orange County YMCA in 1972.

Presenters were Irvine Co. President Tom Nielsen and Louise Pomeroy. Dinner chairman Tom Malcolm read a proclamation from state Sen. John Seymour (R-Anaheim) citing the recipients’ work with such groups as United Way, the Orange County Performing Arts Center, South Coast Repertory, American Red Cross and Anaheim Memorial Hospital. More than 250 attended the dinner, which netted the YMCA $25,000.
