Calling the bombing of abortion clinics “cowardly and vicious,” a federal judge Tuesday sentenced a lay minister to 10 years in prison for conspiring to bomb 10 clinics or offices of abortion supporters in three states and the District of Columbia.

Michael D. Bray, 33, a house painter and lay co-pastor at the Grace Reformation Lutheran Church in Bowie, Md., was also ordered to pay more than $43,000 in restitution.

“Bombings of this sort are among the most cowardly and vicious of all criminal acts,” U.S. District Judge Alexander Harvey II said. Bray apologized for his involvement in the bombings and told the court that he had respect for the law and Harvey’s authority.
