Two police officers returned this week to the city’s police force--one after an eight-month leave to attend school in Germany and the second from a disability pension leave, according to Chief Frank Beeson.

Officer Fred Koch, 25, who was in Germany as part of his bachelor’s degree program at California State University, Dominguez Hills, and Paul Wolcott, 30, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in 1982, have both returned to the force, Beeson said.

Wolcott was injured during a police chase in which fellow officer Gary Moss was killed. Moss and Wolcott were following two other motorcycle riders when they struck a car.

Beeson said Wolcott will enroll in a training program before he is permitted to work a beat by himself.

“He was a real mess, but the doctors say he is now as good as any other police officer,” Beeson said. “I am really thankful for that.”
