Fireworks Almost Everywhere : South Bay Ready for a Bang-Up Fourth of July

Fireworks and other Independence Day activities are planned in various South Bay cities today. Some continue through the weekend.

Events include:

Carson--”Fourth of July Spectacular” from 4 p.m. on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills. Bicycle races and a track cycling exhibition will be followed by a pop concert, “An American Salute,” at 8 p.m. Fireworks display follows. All activities are free.

El Segundo--Activities featuring booths, games and food begin at 11 a.m. at the El Segundo Recreation and Parks Department, 401 Sheldon St. Free fireworks display begins at dusk.

El Camino College--The Lions Club will sponsor a fireworks display on the football field. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and free for those 6 and under.

Gardena--A celebration at Rowley Park, 13220 S. Van Ness Ave., from 1 to 9 p.m. will include food, games booths and races and a fireworks display. Admission is free. In another holiday event, the Gen. William Stark Rosecrans Post 3261, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and its Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual barbecue from 1 to 6 p.m. at 1822 W. 162nd St. Admission is $6 and $3.50 for children under 12.

Lawndale--Musical entertainment will begin at 8 p.m. on the Leuzinger High School football field, followed by a free fireworks display.

Lomita--The city’s Jubilee Fair runs today through Sunday at Lomita Park, 24418 Eshelman Ave. Activities begin at 11 a.m. (noon Sunday), and include a classic car display, magic show, continuous entertainment, rides, booths, crafts and pony rides. A free fireworks display is planned for Friday night.

Rancho Palos Verdes--A country fair will be held at Point Vicente Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring musical entertainment, puppet shows, pony rides and crafts demonstrations.

San Pedro--The San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Fourth of July observance at the Korean Bell in Angel’s Gate Park, Gaffey Street at 37th Street, at 11:30 a.m.. At 9 p.m. a free fireworks display will begin at the Cabrillo Marine Museum, 3720 Stephen White Drive.

Torrance--Wilson Park, 2300 Jefferson St., is the site of a celebration beginning at noon. Continuous musical entertainment and more than 50 food and game booths will be featured. A free fireworks display will begin at 8:45 p.m.
