A 1,400-name petition and 2,000 letters urging Congress to extend the so-called Superfund to clean up toxic wastes have been presented to U.S. Sen. Pete Wilson’s Westwood office by representatives from Assemblyman Tom Hayden’s (D-Santa Monica) Campaign for Economic Democracy and the California Public Interest Research Group.

The fund, originally set up for five years, has a $1.6-billion budget and is scheduled to expire Oct. 1. Representatives of local and national groups are urging Congress to extend the fund for an additional five years.
