Ships Collide off Japan

TOKYO —
A Japanese steel carrier sank after colliding with an American container ship off central Japan on Friday, leaving one Japanese seaman missing, Maritime Safety Agency officials said. They said the collision between the 19,444-ton American Apollo and the 690-ton Kyowa Maru occurred off Shimoda, about 80 miles southwest of Tokyo.
