Some of the game’s top attractions had their difficulties, however.

PGA champion Lee Trevino, a three-time Canadian Open winner, had a second 75 and failed to qualify.

Johnny Miller, one stroke off the lead after the first day’s play, fell back with a 75 and was at 143. Jack Nicklaus was also at 143 after a 73 that included four bogeys.

Don January shot a course-record eight-under-par 64 at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., to take the lead after two rounds of the $200,000 Greenbrier Seniors tournament.

January had nine birdies and one bogey on the 6,709-yard The Greenbrier Course. His total of 134 gave him a one-stroke lead over Harold Henning, the first-round leader.

The previous course record, a 67, was set by Barney Thompson in 1978 and tied Thursday by Henning. Henning shot a 68 Friday.

At Sugar Land, Tex., Amy Alcott shot a four-under-par 68 to extend her lead to four shots in the $300,000 Hall of Fame tournament.
