A Hitachi official said the company will cut capital spending in its semiconductor division by 20% this fiscal year because of sluggish demand. Yasushi Sayama, manager of public and investor relations, said in an interview that the company had first allocated about $524 million for capital spending on semiconductor projects in fiscal 1985 ending next March, unchanged from fiscal 1984. However, he said, it is now planning to slash that amount by 20% because semiconductor sales are expected to remain sluggish.
