President Lansana Conte, who survived a coup attempt by a member of his ruling military council last week, announced Sunday that the plotter, former Prime Minister Diarra Traore, has been captured and faces death.

The president ridiculed Traore, saying he was found Saturday night “hiding under a bed. (He) will not be allowed to breathe. Let everyone understand, I will kill all of those who have been arrested.”

Conte announced that 18 people died in the coup attempt and that 229 were injured.

Conte said he had advance information about the plot and had even received a list of the top conspirators before he left Conakry last week.
