Notebook / Alan Drooz : Waves Outfielder From Rolling Hills Named All-American

Pepperdine University outfielder Brad Bierley has capped his sensational senior year by being named to Baseball America’s All-American team. Bierley, who prepped at Rolling Hills High, was a solid player for the Waves for three years and last season set school records in nearly every power category.

Bierley, who led Pepperdine to a 52-15-1 record and No. 8 national ranking, led the Waves with a .354 average, hit a school-record 27 home runs and batted in 76 runs. He set Pepperdine career home run and slugging records and and was named West Coast Athletic Conference player of the year.

Bierley is joined on the All-America team by Pepperdine pitcher Scott Marrett. The rest of the team: catcher B. J. Surhoff of North Carolina (the first pick in the recent pro draft), first baseman Will Clark of Mississippi State, second baseman Billy Bates of Texas, third baseman Jeff King of Arkansas, shortstop Barry Larkin of Michigan, outfielders Pete Incaviglia of Oklahoma State and Mike Watters of Michigan, designated hitter Frank Fazzini of Florida State and pitchers Greg Swindell of Texas, Mike Cook of South Carolina, Jeff Brantley of Mississippi State and Rick Raether of Miami.

Bierley didn’t have much time to celebrate his award. He was a fifth-round selection of the Minnesota Twins and is playing for Visalia of the California League. Marrett, a fourth-round choice of the Angels, is playing for Redwood in the California League.

Monica Westhead, oldest daughter of new Loyola Marymount University basketball Coach Paul Westhead, has been hired as a teacher at St. Bernard High School where she will coach girls basketball.

“It was a race to see which Westhead would get a coaching job first,” the father said. “She beat me to the punch.”

The annual West Torrance Lions All-Star football game will have six South Bay stars in stripes for the Aug. 8 contest at El Camino College. All six officials are South Bay residents, and they have 98 years of officiating experience among them.

Duff Means of Torrance will be referee, with Mel MacArthur of Torrance as umpire. Ed Flynn of Manhattan Beach will be head linesman, Paul Archuleta of Hawthorne line judge, Gary Copeland of Torrance field judge and Greg Fucci of Redondo Beach the back judge.

Means, principal of Centinela Valley Adult School, is the veteran of the group with 25 years of officiating. MacArthur has 22 years, Flynn and Archuleta 19.

El Camino College will host the soccer portion of the World Games for the Deaf today through July 20. Tickets for soccer and the other events are on sale at the sites as well as over the phone at (213) 456-4264. The number is equipped with a telecommunications device for the deaf.
