The Boston Red Sox, desperate for pitching help to keep them in the American League East race, acquired veteran southpaw Tim Lollar from the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.

Red Sox General Manager Lou Gorman said that the Red Sox also will receive a player to be named in the trade which sent reserve outfielder Reid Nichols to the White Sox.

Lollar, 29, helped the Padres to the 1984 National League Championship with an 11-13 record record last year. He went to the White Sox in a multiplayer trade in which San Diego got LaMarr Hoyt.

“Tim Lollar will add depth to our pitching staff and that’s something we badly need right now,” Gorman said after announcing the deal in Seattle before the Boston’s game against the Mariners.

Red Sox Manager John McNamara said that Lollar is expected to report today. He said Lollar will be in the bullpen for the weekend series, then probably will be used as a fifth starter after the All-Star Game until Roger Clemens is ready to come off the disabled list.

Lollar was a disappointment for Chicago this season. In 18 games, he was 3-5 with a 4.66 earned-run average. He made 13 starts and five relief appearances.

Nichols, 26, has been with Boston since September, 1980. This season, he is batting .188 with only 32 plate appearances in 21 games. He hit his first home run of the season Wednesday night at Oakland.
